In 1960s the germanium was found in coal composition about few kilometers away from Novikovo settlement (it was Yaman during Karafuto period) and since then the settlement became known all over Soviet Union. After the coal mining was stopped, the mines were flooded and became beautiful lakes with a turquoise-colored water.
The Cape, which beauty is hard to be described in words. Once you see it, you would never forget it. And should you climb it, you would feel a total freedom and enjoy amazing views.
The bay, which shores are covered with rare herbs and flowers, was named Tikhaya by famous seaman Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern. This is a rocky inaccessible island, inhabited primarily by loud sea gulls. Only their calls break a drowsy silence of this corner of paradise.
Kuznetsov Cape is the Monument of Nature. It was named after captain Kuznetsov D.I., who was in charge of the military force, that protected Russian borders at the Far East in 1857. The Cape is located at the South-West coast of Krilion island, a plateau-like surface with cliffed shore.
Not far from the Cape, there is another point of interest – Vindis Cape, which is named by locals Kovrizhka (“Gingerbread” in Russian), because of the shape of the mountain, where the Cape is located. The 78-meters high and about 100-meter in diameter cliff is connected with the coastline with narrow isthmus. The flat part of the mountain is famous amongst archeologists for many artefacts found here, which are the proof that ancient people used to inhabit it. There is a theory, that in ancient times this mountain was a fortress.
Devil's and Witch's bridges
Devil’s bridge is a unique engineering project of complicated construction. It was built during Karafuto period by colonized Koreans. The bridge was used for the train route between Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Kholmsk. The train made a spiral through the 900-meter long tunnel and then went across the bridge, that was located 38 meters high above the ground.
