The sightseeing tour with skilled “Bi-tomo” guides-interpreters will show you this unique town in all its beauty.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a town with many names. Once known as Vladimirovka (when we speak about tsarist Russia and infamous penal colony). This town is called simply Yuzhniy in Russian and even Toyohara, when people remember the Japanese period and events, closely connected with this time.

The town was established in 1882. Despite its relative “youth”, it has amazing history and there are many places, which are deeply intertwined with both traditional Russian, Japanese and Korean cultures and modern oil and gas projects.

Key sights of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Sakhalin Regional Museum was built in 1937, when Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was Japanese town Toyohara. This is the reason this building has a unique façade appearance, so called Nihon Shumi (Japanese Crown) which has its features: body bricks and vitreous tiles, building surrounded by wonderful garden with landscape design and big amount of different flowers. The rich exhibition of museum is of great interest too.

The monument, devoted to Neftegorsk townspeople, holds the memory about the most destructive earthquake in Russia during last 100 years, that occurred on May 28th 1995, is located on Lenin Square. The whole settlement Neftegorsk was destroyed, the number of perished reached 2000 people. The “5 minutes of silence” method was first implemented during salvage operations, when all works and tech stopped and everybody were not talking in order to hear moans and voices from under the rubble, which helped in searches of the survived.

The unique tourist attraction of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is the Cathedral of Nativity. Its height is over 70 meters; it has the biggest outdoor mosaic painting (14 meters), which was made by Israeli masters. There are 3 floors in Cathedral, where 1000 people can pray simultaneously. Different parts of temple, bells and stained-glass panels were made all around the Russia, collecting all the best from Christian world in one place.

In the Museum of railway technics, you can see wonderful exhibit items from both early Soviet and Japanese periods.

The public Gagarin Park, that was opened in Japanese period, has its unique charism and is now an example of quintessence of two different cultures. The park has both beautiful landscape design, interesting monuments, unique plants and artificial pond.

Glory Square, Victory Square and museum-memorial complex “Pobeda”, that were built in the memory of the heroic victory in the Great Patriotic War and the end of World War II, will help to delve deep into the history and pay respects to the courage of our heroes.

The ski resort “Mountain Air” – the famous vacation destination for skiers with amazing panoramic views – is located not far from the Victory Square.
